The endocannabinoid system (ECS) was first identified in the 1990s when researchers were exploring the effects of THC on the body. Whether or not you use marijuana products, the endocannabinoid system is fully active in your body. This cell-signaling system regulates an array of body functions, including sleep, appetite, memory, mood, and fertility. Let’s look at the ECS and how it interacts with the cannabinoids found in cannabis.
The ECS is composed of three components:
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the main cannabinoids in cannabis and produces that feeling we refer to as a high. This cannabinoid can influence the responses from the ECS by binding to the system’s receptors. It can bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors.
When THC binds to the ECS receptors, it can manipulate the brain and body. It will signal the brain to release hormones, allowing you to experience pain relief, an increase in your appetite, less stress, and more. It, unfortunately, can cause you to feel paranoid or anxious if too much THC is consumed.
In addition to THC, cannabis has another major cannabinoid. Cannabidiol (CBD) doesn’t get you high like THC. It simply soothes your mind and body, helping you relax.
Since research into the endocannabinoid system is still in its early stages, scientists are not positive about how CBD affects the ECS. However, they have found that the cannabinoid does not bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors. They speculate that CBD prevents the endocannabinoids from being broken down by the enzymes, allowing the endocannabinoids to have a greater effect on the human body. Some say there’s a receptor in the body that CBD adheres to that we have not discovered yet.
While there’s some debate on how CBD interacts with the ECS, research has been released showing that CBD can relieve pain, nausea, and a variety of other symptoms associated with physical and mental conditions.
If you’re suffering from a physical or mental condition, your ECS might play a role in the symptoms you’re experiencing. You may get relief from your symptoms by using medical marijuana.
